The Foodie Travel Guide

Sharpham Estate

Covering 550 acres, Sharpham Estate released its first vintage in 1985.

Today, during peak seasons, production can reach up to 100,000 bottles, with most being enjoyed by local pubs, restaurants, and boutique hotels.

Visitors can sample both still and sparkling varieties, including red, white, and rosé wines. Notably, some selections like the tropical lychee-scented Bacchus are crafted using grapes sourced from the nearby Sandridge vineyard.

Tour Sharpham Vineyard

In the summer, guided vineyard tours offer an insightful experience. During the rest of the year, guests are welcome to explore at their own pace via a self-guided trail.

Every grapevine is clearly marked, and an informative leaflet provides background details on each variety.

The primary grape grown here is Madeleine Angevine, a white variety that originated in the Loire Valley and is well-suited to the UK’s climate due to its reliability and ease of cultivation.

The scenic trail takes about 30 to 45 minutes to complete, leading past the historic house and gently down to the river’s edge.

Enjoy panoramic views over the River Dart as you meander through the vineyard.

Do a Tutored Wine Tasting

A variety of tasting experiences are available, tailored to how many wines you’d like to try and whether you wish to include cheese sampling.

For the ultimate visit, opt for The Sharpham Experience—a comprehensive package that features a tour of the estate’s house, vineyard, and winery, rounded off with a light lunch and a complimentary glass of wine.

Don’t miss out on trying Sharpham Estate’s crisp, citrusy white wine with delicate elderflower aromas or their irresistible rosé made from Rondo grapes, which offers a flavor reminiscent of strawberries and cream.

Taste Delicious Sharpham Cheese

Adjacent to the winery is the estate’s dairy, where cheeses are crafted from the creamy milk of their Jersey cows. A selection of goat’s cheese is also produced here.

Cheese-making has been part of the Sharpham tradition since 1981, earning the estate numerous acclaimed awards over the years.

Through the creamery windows, visitors can observe the different stages of the cheese-making process. Be sure to try some before you leave—or better yet, take a few wedges home from the shop.
